🌋 Research at the Nisyros Geopark by Drexel University (USA)

The Nisyros Geopark served as the site of an important scientific research project conducted by students and faculty from Drexel University (USA), as part of an intensive field-based academic program.
The research took place in September, coinciding with the official recognition of Nisyros as a UNESCO Global Geopark, making the Drexel team the first official researchers to work on the island following its inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

The researchers recorded surface temperatures, carbon dioxide emissions, and geospatial photogrammetry data across the Stefanos, Polyvotis, Alexandros, and Kaminakia craters. These data are used to create three-dimensional models that depict the hydrothermal activity of the active volcano and contribute to its long-term monitoring.
Of particular importance is the participation of volcanologist Dr. Loÿc Vanderkluysen, who has been studying Nisyros for decades and has made a significant contribution to the geological mapping of the volcano. The research program is expected to continue on an annual basis.

This research strengthens the international scientific presence of the Nisyros Geopark, contributes to the protection and understanding of its unique volcanic environment, and promotes sustainable development and knowledge of the island.
