34th Panhellenic Conference of the Panhellenic Network of Ecological Organizations (PANDOIKO)
The 34th Panhellenic Conference of the Panhellenic Network of Ecological Organizations (PANDOIKO) will take place in Nisyros from October 11-13, 2024, co-organized with the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE), the Hellenic Recycling Agency (EOAN), the Municipaliti of Nisyros Corporation for Public Benefit (DIKEN), and the Nisyros Geopark.
The conference will address the following topics:
“The aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark of Nisyros”
“Waste Management on Small Islands”
The venue for the Conference is the hall of the Zosimopouleio Cultural Center in Nisyros. The opening will take place on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 17:30.
Distinguished scientists and representatives from various organizations will shed light on these two important issues that concern local communities, contributing to the improvement of living conditions. The Conference will support and promote the candidacy of the Nisyros Geopark for UNESCO recognition.
The Nisyros Geopark has been shaped over thousands of years by both geological forces and human activities. It is distinguished by its untouched volcanic landscape, transporting visitors to its impressive past. It includes the massive volcanic craters of the caldera, the heart of Nisyros island, and its thermal springs, as well as the surrounding volcanic islets. Nisyros aims to integrate its Geopark into the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network (GGN).
Small islands face many challenges. They have limited geographic space, a relative lack of natural resources, problems finding suitable sites for waste disposal, high-value land due to tourism development, and significant seasonal population fluctuations. This last factor leads to a sharp increase in waste generation, disproportionate to the size of the islands. The Conference aims to seek the best solutions for small islands, also examining good practices where they exist.
