The emblematic public event “EGU Geoscience Day 2023” was completed with great success on October 20th, 2023 at the Bellonio Cultural Center (Fira, Santorini) and the Zosimopouleio Theater (Mandraki, Nisyros) with parallel activities for children and the general public, organized by the Scientific team of the Laboratory of Physical Geography of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) in collaboration with the Hellenic UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet), City Lab (STEM education), the Municipality of Thira and the Municipality of Nisyros and funded by the European Geoscience Union (EGU).

At least 200 students from the Vocational High School and High School of Thira in Santorini and 60 from the Primary School of Mandraki in Nisyros had the opportunity to discover the geological history of the two most active volcanic complexes in Greece with the aim of raising awareness and being informed about the potential volcanic geohazards and the importance of volcano monitoring. In Nisyros, the event included educational talks for children and the public, STEM activities and a guided tour of the active hydrothermal field in the active hydrothermal craters of the UNESCO World Geopark Candidate of Nisyros.
