📌 4th Summer School in Natural Sciences

The Nisyros Geopark, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Climatology and Atmospheric Environment of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), is organizing the 4th Summer School in Natural Sciences, taking place from 1 to 8 June 2025 in Emporeios, Nisyros.
For yet another year, the event is hosted at the Educational Centre of Emborios, the old Primary School building which has been graciously granted by the Municipality of Nisyros to the organizing Laboratory. The Summer School is now a well-established institution on the island and is held under the auspices of the Interinstitutional Postgraduate Program “Water, Biosphere and Climate Change”, with the participation of postgraduate students from the program’s partner universities.

🔬 Interdisciplinary approach – An “open-air” laboratory of natural sciences
The program brings together scientists and students from diverse scientific fields:
• Meteorology and Climatology
• Oceanography
• Geology and Geoenvironment
• Forestry and Ecology
• Environmental Sciences

Throughout the week, participants will attend lectures, thematic seminars, and field exercises across the island of Nisyros, which functions as a Natural Science Laboratory.
Students will complete both theoretical curriculum and outdoor coursework, including:

• Micro-bioclimate measurements in Nisyros settlements
• Methods for predicting forest fire behavior in Greece
• Dendrochronological studies for reconstructing Nisyros’ climate over the past 200 years
• Air quality monitoring and atmospheric pollution analysis
• Environmental observation of the active Nisyros volcano
• Geological mapping of the island’s volcanic evolution

🌍 Culture, sustainability, and advanced technology
Moreover, participants will:

✓ Be introduced to the geocultural heritage and the ongoing initiatives of Nisyros’ aspiring UNESCO Geopark, fostering environmental awareness and sustainability
✓ Participate in on-site observations of volcanic landforms and tectonic features
✓ Identify potential geological and climatic hazards
✓ Gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art scientific instruments, including:
• Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)
• Parrot Thermal Drone
• Kestrel Weather & Environmental Meters
• PurpleAir sensors

📢 Public engagement and community outreach
As part of the Summer School activities, an Informational Seminar will be held on June 4th for the residents of Nisyros, highlighting the opportunities and positive prospects associated with the island’s potential inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
