Educational Activity at the Elementary School of Nisyros
✨ Yesterday, we journeyed with the young students of the Mandraki Elementary School into the magical world of volcanoes and biodiversity!
On the occasion of International Day for Biodiversity (22 May), Elisavet Nikoli, geoscientist of Nisyros Geopark, visited the Elementary School of Mandraki on Friday, May 23, 2025, offering an inspiring, hands-on educational experience to the children of the island.
🌋🦎 The educational activity, titled “Welcome to the World of Volcanoes!”, included an interactive presentation about volcanoes, their geological processes, and the unique biodiversity of Nisyros, which flourishes thanks to its volcanic nature.
🎓 The students:
📚 Learned about rare and endangered species of plants and animals on the island, such as the Nisyros Bellflower, the Bonelli’s Eagle, the Peregrine Falcon, the Mediterranean Monk Seal — and discovered why volcanic soil teems with life! 🦅🪻
🔍 Observed and recorded real volcanic rocks and minerals (lava, pumice, obsidian, sulfur) using a specially designed observation sheet,
💥 And finally… became “junior volcanologists” by creating their very own volcanic eruption experiment using simple materials — capturing the explosive side of science with excitement!
This activity aimed to foster environmental awareness, enhance understanding of local geology and ecosystems, and inspire children to become the future guardians of Nisyros’ geoheritage and biodiversity.
💚 Knowledge becomes play — and protecting our island begins in the classroom.
