Presentation of the Digital Guide “Nisyros Geopark App”

We are pleased to announce the presentation of the project “Digital Guide of the Nisyros Geopark”, which took place at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy by the Scientific Coordinator of the Geopark, Evi Nomikou, on behalf of the team from the University of Athens, as part of Nisyros Geopark’s candidacy for inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
The project was funded by the General Secretariat of the Aegean & Island Policy in collaboration with the Municipal Public Benefit Enterprise of Nisyros (D.H.K.E.N.) and the Municipality of Nisyros.

The new virtual tour mobile application “Nisyros Geopark App” offers:
Interactive visual content for all geosites
Information on geocultural features and biodiversity
Virtual navigation through high-resolution digital maps
A glossary of geological terms and tips for visiting an active volcano
Accessibility features for people with disabilities (PwD)

The application serves as a modern tool for education, awareness, and geo-tourism promotion, contributing to the visibility of Nisyros’s unique volcanic geomorphology and the delivery of high-standard services. The development and technical implementation of the digital application were carried out and supported by EContent Systems.
Nisyros is the youngest and only active volcano in Greece that is currently a candidate for UNESCO Global Geopark designation, functioning as an open-air volcanological museum.
The event was honored by a welcome speech from the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Mr. Stefanos Gikas, and strongly supported by the Secretary General of the Aegean and Island Policy Mr. Manolis Koutoulakis.

Among those who addressed the significance of the project were:
Dodecanese Members of Parliament Ioannis Pappas and Vasilis Ypsilantis
Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) Andreas Fiorentinos
Mayor of Nisyros Christofis Koroneos
Deputy Governor of Kos–Nisyros Konstantina Svinou
President of the Network of Small Islands Eleftherios Kehagioglou
