1st Nisyros Geopark Celebration – A Two-Day Celebration Dedicated to Nature, Science and Local Tradition

The 1st Nisyros Geopark Celebration was successfully held on 18 and 19 April 2026, attracting strong participation from residents, visitors and educators. The two-day event was dedicated to the island’s unique geological and natural heritage.
The Celebration highlighted the strong connection between science, local identity and culture, reinforcing the role of the Geopark as a pillar of sustainable development and environmental education.

Day 1 | 18 April 2026 – Culture and Tradition

The first day of the events, held at Polyvotis Guesthouse, was dedicated to the local traditions and customs of Nisyros.
The Cultural Association “Diavatis” presented performances inspired by the island’s folk heritage, offering the audience an authentic experience of Nisyros’ cultural identity.
The evening concluded with a tasting of local delicacies and traditional products, strengthening the connection between gastronomy, local culture and tradition.

Day 2 | 19 April 2026 – Science and Geological Heritage

The second day, hosted at Zosimopouleio Hall, focused on scientific knowledge and the international importance of the Nisyros Geopark.
The event began with the welcoming of educators from the Directorate of Primary Education, followed by an address from the Director of Primary Education.

During the conference, important scientific presentations were delivered by international research teams, including INGV and the University of Potsdam, both actively involved in the study of the volcanic system of Nisyros.

Particular interest was drawn by:

● The speech of the Mayor of Nisyros, Mr. Christofis Koronaiou, on the importance of the Geopark within the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network
● The presentation by Professor of Geology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Dr. Evi Nomikou, on the geological uniqueness of Nisyros

Educational Activities and Environmental Awareness

As part of the two-day event, educational activities were also organised with the participation of primary education teachers (4th Directorate of Primary Education), in connection with Earth Day, celebrated annually on 22 April.

The activities included:

● a scientific guided tour of the volcano
● presentations
● educational activities

Participants had the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the unique geo-environment of Nisyros, understanding the importance of natural processes for environmental protection and the development of environmental awareness.

The 1st Geopark Celebration confirmed the role of Nisyros as a place of international geological significance, as well as a living environment that successfully combines science, education, culture and local community life.
