Conference “The Nisyros Geopark” at the Academy of Athens

With great success, the conference entitled “The Nisyros Geopark” was held on Monday, 8 December 2025. The event was co-organized by the Nisyros Geopark, the Research Centre for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology of the Academy of Athens, and the Municipality of Nisyros, and took place in the Eastern Hall of the Academy of Athens.

Participants had the opportunity to attend a series of high-level scientific presentations highlighting:

● the significance of Nisyros’ geoheritage,

● the prospects for its recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark,

● the role of the Geopark in research, education, and sustainable development.

Speakers of the conference

● Dr. Christofis Koroneos, Mayor of Nisyros

● Prof. Nikos Zouros, University of the Aegean

● Dr. Charalampos Fassoulas, Vice Chair of UNESCO’s Council on Global Geoparks

● Prof. Paraskevi Nomikou, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)

● Prof. Panagiotis Nastos, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)

The event was coordinated by Academician Mr. Christos Zerefos.
The conference is part of the ongoing close collaboration between the Academy of Athens and the Municipality of Nisyros, which officially began with the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation in 2022. This joint effort aims at protecting geoheritage, promoting sustainability, and highlighting the unique natural wealth of Nisyros.
The Nisyros Geopark continues dynamically on its path toward inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, reaffirming the island’s pivotal role in geological research and environmental education. Nisyros is not merely a geological formation—it is a living volcano, a place of global geoheritage.
