Nisyros: Where the Earth is Still Alive
Geodiversity is much more than rocks and geological formations. It is the geological foundation of life — shaping ecosystems, landscapes, culture and human activity.
In Nisyros, this relationship is unique.
One of the youngest and most active volcanic systems of the Aegean, with its spectacular caldera, hydrothermal craters, hot springs, volcanic formations and submarine volcanic environment, Nisyros is a living natural laboratory where geological processes are not simply part of the past — they are still happening today.
On this geological foundation, the biodiversity, landscapes, settlements, agriculture, architecture and culture of Nisyros have evolved.
The inclusion of Nisyros in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in 2026 is an important international recognition of this extraordinary heritage. At the same time, it represents a responsibility: to understand, protect, research and share this heritage with future generations.
Because geodiversity is irreplaceable natural heritage.
And protecting it is not only the responsibility of scientists. It is a responsibility we all share.
Visit the Volcanological Museum in Nikia and discover the volcanic history of Nisyros — a story that continues to shape the island and life on it.
We need to understand the Earth in order to protect it.
And protect it so that future generations can continue to know it.
