International scientific research at Nisyros Geopark
In October 2025, Nisyros Geopark hosted an important geophysical research campaign, during which an extensive Deep Electrical Resistivity Tomography (DERT) survey was carried out on the island for the first time. The survey enables imaging of the volcanic structure at depths exceeding 1 km.
The research was conducted by a team of geophysicists led by Invert sàrl (Switzerland) and funded by the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) within the framework of the DEMETRA research project, which focuses on the relationship between volcanic activity and climate change.
Over the course of five days, 14 scientists from Switzerland, Greece and Italy participated, a network of 34 geophysical recording stations was deployed and 58 geoelectrical current transmissions were carried out, enabling the imaging of the volcanic subsurface at depths greater than 1 kilometre.
The collected data will contribute significantly to improving scientific knowledge of the geometry of the Nisyros volcanic system and the circulation of hydrothermal fluids, enhancing the understanding of active volcanic systems.
