Official Ceremony Celebrating the Recognition of Nisyros as a UNESCO Global Geopark

On Friday, 21 August, the people of Nisyros gathered in front of the Town Hall to celebrate a historic achievement: the island’s recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

It was a celebration of Nisyros and everything that makes the island unique. Its geological heritage, its culture, its traditions and the people who are part of this place.
Mayor Christofis Koronaios welcomed residents and visitors, while Prof. Evi Nomikou, Scientific Coordinator of Nisyros UNESCO Global Geopark, spoke about the significance and the responsibility that comes with becoming part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network.

The evening was also marked by the proclamation of Giorgos Koumoutsakos, Permanent Delegate of Greece to UNESCO, as an Honorary Citizen of Nisyros, in recognition of his important contribution to Nisyros’ journey towards UNESCO recognition.
The evening closed with traditional dances by the Cultural Association “Diavatis”, music and local treats, with residents and visitors celebrating together.

The UNESCO recognition marks a new chapter for Nisyros and its Geopark.
