Official Inclusion of Nisyros in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network with the Scientific Seal of NKUA
The official recognition of Nisyros as a UNESCO Global Geopark is highlighted in a recent announcement by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), emphasizing the decisive role of scientific research in this achievement.
According to the article, the designation was officially announced during a ceremony held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, in the presence of representatives of the Greek state, local authorities, and the scientific community. Among those attending were the Scientific Coordinator of the Geopark, Professor of Geology at NKUA, Evι Nomikou, the Mayor of Nisyros, Christofis Koronaios, as well as the President of the Geopark, Evangelos Tasioulas, all of whom actively contributed to representing and promoting the island at an international level. This distinction establishes Nisyros as the first and only UNESCO Global Geopark in the Dodecanese, confirming the international significance of its geological and natural heritage.
A key aspect of this success is the leading contribution of NKUA’s Department of Geology and Geoenvironment. The scientific team played a central role in preparing and documenting the geopark’s nomination dossier, highlighting the island’s unique volcanic system and its importance as a reference site for the study of active geological processes.
The article also underscores that this recognition is the result of long-term scientific effort and collaboration, combining research excellence with local engagement. The scientific support provided by NKUA ensured that the geological features of Nisyros were presented as a globally significant natural asset, strengthening its position within the international geopark network.
The inclusion of Nisyros in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network not only reflects its outstanding geodiversity but also reinforces its role as a hub for research, education, and sustainable development, opening new perspectives for both the scientific community and the local society.
