On-Site Evaluation of Nisyros Geopark by UNESCO

The mission of the on-site evaluation of the Nisyros Geopark (Nisyros aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark) by the UNESCO expert evaluation committee has been completed. The evaluators visited Nisyros from October 30th to November 3rd, 2022, aiming to verify and assess the contents of the Geopark’s candidacy dossier for inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geopark Network, which was submitted in November 2021. The scientific coordination of the entire project is led by Associate Professor Dr. Nomikou Paraskevi, from the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA), who is also the scientific head of Nisyros Geopark in geological matters. Dr. Panagiotis Nastos, a professor at the same department, collaborates, along with the scientific team from EKPA (Dr. Varvara Antoniou, Postgraduate Students: Dimitris Panousis and Elisavet Nikoli).
The coordination of the preparation and submission of the file, as well as communication with the National Commission of Greece for UNESCO and the UNESCO Geoparks Directorate, is overseen by Professor Dr. Emmanouloudis Dimitrios from the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment at the International Hellenic University. Noteworthy during the evaluation days was the participation of foreign graduate students from the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Program ‘Pangea,’ which includes the specialization ‘Climate Changes and Impacts on the Environment’ within the Master’s Program ‘Earth and Environmental Sciences.’
