Participation at the 17th International Conference of European UNESCO Geoparks at Reykjanes Geopark, Iceland

The Nisyros Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark participated in the 17th International Conference of European UNESCO Geoparks, held from October 2-4 at the Reykjanes Unesco Global Geopark – Iceland in Keflavik, Iceland. Representing Nisyros were Μs. Paraskevi Nomikou, the Geopark’s Scientific Director, Ms. Elisavet Nikoli, Geoscientist, and Mr. Evangelos Tasioulas, Coordinator from the Nisyros Municipal Public Benefit Enterprise (DIKEN).

During the conference, Ms. Nomikou presented the work titled “Nisyros Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark: Integrating Geology, Culture, and Community for Sustainable Growth,” highlighting efforts to combine Nisyros’ rich geological heritage with local culture and community for sustainable development.
Additionally, the team participated in two field trips: a) Cultural Exploration in Reykjanes Geopark, exploring the connection between geology and culture in the area, and b) Volcano Hike at Fagradalsfjall, an unforgettable trek across the volcanic eruptions from 2021, 2022, and 2023, which provided deeper insight into the area’s geological and cultural links with the local community.
The conference was a valuable opportunity to exchange views, ideas, and experiences with other representatives of UNESCO Global Geoparks across Europe, strengthening the shared mission of sustainably managing natural and cultural resources.
